Kal Kissne Dekha Review: Bollywood Launch ke Superhit Formulae

Vashu Bhagnani has been instrumental in launching talents or producing the second movie of stars-to-be in the last ten years:
First film of Tusshar Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Madhavan, Keerti Reddy, Tara Sharma;
Also the first films of Sohail Khan (as the presenter of Pyar KTD Kya), Ashu Trikha, Gautam Menon, Apoorva-Ramanjeet and Anupam Kher as directors;
Second film of Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal , Ritesh Deshmukh.

The director of the film to launch Vashu’s son, Jackky is Vivek Sharma, who directed Amitabh Bachchan starred Bhootnath released in 2008. Bhootnath boasted of a touching tale of the Ghost who befriends a little boy (master Aman). The film had good special effects by Bollywood standards and a good supporting cast and casting (Juhi Chawla, Shah Rukh Khan, Satish Shah, Rajpal Yadav and Priyanshu).

Kal Kissne Dekha is a big disappointment from Vivek Sharma. Producer Vashu Bhagnani has not compromised on the budget but the product is nothing more than the Bollywood Formula. The problem lies in the script and the ‘formulization’ of the script.

Even since celebrity (Actor / Film makers) kids were launched in Bollywood, there has been a formula that
has been developing as the magic potion to work at the box office or create a star out of the son/daughter.

Product to launch – Jackky Bhagnani (best known as Vashu Bhagnani’s son, and the boy who became 70 kgs from 130 kgs)

Formula #1
Cast a pretty young thing (preferably debutant and good looking model) opposite him

The girl is Vyshalee Desai, grand-niece of Manmohan Desai and a model from Bangalore, for last 5-6 years. She looks good and can easily endorse all brands under the sun, especially shampoos, face products, toothpaste et al.

Formula #2
The hero should be able to everything – sing, dance, fight, save society, be the best in studies, full of values, extremely well behaved etc. etc.

Jackky as Nihaal does everything. Yes, everything. He now has the perfect show reel on 35mm. He looks like Uday Chopra, smiles like Hrithik, dances like Harman, and so on.

Formula #3
Poor Boy Rich Girl – Takraar, Vaar, Inkaar, Iqraar, Pyaar!!!

The same old story in the same old college setup. And we have the bad boys of college creating hell for the ‘small town boy’

Formula #4
Clichéd Characters

Talkative Punjabi mom, Filmi roommate, Warm hearted Governess, Strict father, Encouraging Professor – haven’t we seen enough of them

Formula #5
Shoot in Foreign Locations, pass them as Mumbai

Vashu Bhagnani did that with Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein. This time too the film is shot in New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand. Only in the climax, the action is back to the good old streets, docks and railway stations of Mumbai .

Formula #6
Special Appearances

Sanjay Dutt as a DJ and Juhi Chawla as a MC appear in fleeting appearances. Rajpal Yadav does an Asrani kind of a Jailor. Riteish plays the Don Kaalicharan in an extended cameo which also forms a part of the story, which seems inspired by Johny Lever’s role in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Riteish’s own Apna Sapna Money Money. Riteish is definitely the bright star with his comic timing.

Formula #7
Song and Dances

Jackky has enough songs and dances that he can perform at all the awards shows till next June. Though the songs are a bit too many, they are peppy and well composed by Sajid-Wajid.

Formula #8
They don’t shoot you

The goons flash their guns at the drop of a hat, and even try to kill Nihaal at an event. But surprise surprise, when Nihaal does walk upto them, they don’t want to kill Nihaal with their guns, and rather get into fist fights, and soon, they all die. How about that!!!

Formula #9
The hero is smart yet dumb in some way

After Nihaal saves Meesha in the shopping mall, he is supposed to have seen the person behind the bomb. However he does nothing to stop him and even helps him with his next big venture. He admits at the end that he knew, yet his heart could not belief. Well can anything be more stupid than that. After Tani in Rab Ne and Kalpana in Ghajini, the trend is that keep the protagonist naïve about things around him/her.

Formula #10
Plug In Your Next Film

Nihaal is too busy with an assignment given by his mentor, so he keeps saying ‘Do Not Disturb’ well at least 6 times as well as some boards stating the name of Vashu Bhagnani’s next movie.

The premise is interesting, but the execution is mediocre. The special effects in this science fiction of a movie are a big letdown. The movie is a khichdi of many of the films of the last ten years. Even a dialogue “Maa, usne mere powers ka istemal kiya” is straight out of Koi… Mil Gaya (Rohit Hrithik on the phone from Singapore to Mom Rekha)

Well what could have been a good start for a new actor turns out to be a clichéd Bollywood khichdi, which will not have too many takers. Hope that Jackky gets offers out his home banner and both he and Vyshalee can play long innings. Well, Kal kuch bhi ho sakta hai, Kal Kissne Dekha?
